(GivenUs.com) – Difficult, toxic people may seem like the bane of our existence. They exist in schools, our workplaces and sometimes even within our relationships. While some may just annoy us, others can cross the line from difficult to downright abusive.
The question becomes, “How do we deal with difficult or toxic people in our lives?”
Set Firm Boundaries
Healthy relationships require firm boundaries. They let other people know what behaviors we will and will not tolerate. By communicating our own boundaries and then enforcing them, we let toxic people know we won’t spend time with them when they’re engaging in toxic or unhealthy behaviors.
Be Clear About How We Feel
Sometimes, people are toxic because they haven’t yet matured, and they may not understand that a particular behavior is unhealthy. By being clear about how their behavior makes us feel, we allow them the opportunity to learn from the conflict and do better. It’s important not to expect others to read our minds; stay open and honest about your feelings and expect the people in your life to do the same.
End the Relationship
Some relationships can’t be saved no matter how many boundaries we set or feelings we express. If we want to surround ourselves with positive, supportive people, we may need to stop investing our time and energy in toxic relationships. It might be time to end the relationships with people who leave us feeling drained, used or depressed.
