(GivenUs.com) – Dealing with crippling anxiety? It can wreak havoc on your life, especially when it occurs often. In the case of generalized anxiety disorder, panic can seem to hit for no apparent reason. This video explains it better:
Here are some ways to take control of your anxiety and eliminate the fear.
Retrain Your Brain
Rapid heart rate, trouble breathing, feelings of disassociation… the major signs of anxiety can feel crippling. One of the best actions you can take when symptoms hit is to practice self-talk. Ground yourself with positive thoughts like:
- This is not dangerous.
- This, too, shall pass.
- Let’s try this again.
When you feel anxiety coming on, and you’re fearful of a certain place or thing, talk yourself down and remind yourself that you will be okay.
Stay Put!
Anxiety can be helpful in most situations because it triggers fight-or-flight mode in your brain. When signals get reversed and you get a flood of anxiety in a non-threatening situation, you feel the need to react. Your first impulse is to get out or get away. Do the opposite and stay put. Give it a few minutes, and your body will begin to associate with non-fear and start to calm down.
Scan for a Focus Object
One helpful way to rewire your brain and curb a panic attack is to divert and ground yourself. Healthline recommends that you find something nearby to focus on — maybe a plant, painting or other object. Focus intensely on it and nothing else. This can help your mind stop racing and give anxiety time to subside.
Panic attacks and anxious thoughts are a natural part of living. For some, anxiety can take over and bring the day to a screeching halt. A few simple steps could help you take control of your thoughts and bring a sense of hope for tomorrow.
